About Good Steward Box
How many times have you had your child along with you at the store, and they ask to have everything in sight, especially in the check out lines?  I’m a mother of 3 children and this was a frequent experience.  My husband and I decided it was time to teach our children the value of money.

We wanted our children to have money to spend, but more importantly, teach them the principles of tithing and saving.  It was important to us that our children understand that money is earned and not just given.  Second, when you receive money, it is important to set aside a portion to give back to God (tithe) and a portion to save.

At ages 5 and 4, we started giving them an allowance of one dollar in dimes for simple chores like making their beds and keeping their rooms clean.  We made plain white boxes with 3 compartments labeled save, tithe and spend for them to easily separate their money into.  On the top of each compartment, was a picture of the number of coins that go into each slot.  It was simple enough for them to lay the coins down on top of the box and put them in the slots.

Our children are now 12, 11 and 6 and still use the same boxes.  While the chores they have and the amount of allowance they receive has changed, the principles remain the same:  save 30% of what you earn, tithe 10% and give it to your church, spend 60% on the things you want or need.  Our children value the things they save up to buy and take care of them.  They faithfully give back to God a portion of what He has blessed them with.  Now, whenever we go to the store, our children bring along their own money to spend.  They are more aware of how much things cost and not every little thing they see is as important for them to have.   

The Good Steward Box has been a wonderful training tool to teach basic principles of managing money to our children that will follow them into adulthood.  My prayer is that it will be a blessing to you and your family as well.
